Most of the human cases have been located in the Upstate, accounting for five of the seven, according to the statement.

West Nile virus is transmitted by mosquitoes, not person to person, said Dr. David Colby, Chatham-Kent's medical officer of health. However, some individuals - less than one percent - can develop serious neurologic illnesses such as encephalitis or meningitis.

The Regional Municipality of York received laboratory confirmation that an individual from The City of Vaughan has tested positive for West Nile virus, marking York Region's first human case of 2018. Those include 37 birds in Yolo County (including 11 in Davis) as well as 87 mosquito samples.

• Keep screen doors and window screens in good condition so that mosquitoes can not get indoors.


Local residents are encouraged to use repellents, wear protective clothing and avoid being outside during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.

- Install or fix screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out of the home. Fix or replace screens that have tears or holes.

• Dump all standing or stagnant water around the home. Eliminate all sources of standing water on your property by emptying flower pots, old vehicle tires, buckets and other containers.

Through a news release the ISDH provided the following steps to help residents reduce the threat of West Nile virus in their area.
