Biden laments Senate’s division in eulogy for McCain

Before McCain died, the former Arizona senator asked that Trump not attend his funeral, notes the Hill.

The disease that took John's life - that took our friend Ted Kennedy's life, that took my son Beau's life - is brutal, relentless, unforgiving.

"John McCain served his country and John McCain served his country honorably".

"We'd talk about family, we'd talk about politics, we'd talk about worldwide relations, we'd talk about promise, the promise of America because we're both cockeyed optimists and really believe that there's not a single thing beyond the capacity of this country", he added.

"In my years in Congress and as vice president, we didn't always agree either, and he nearly always noticed", Pence said, The New York Times reported.

Both Biden and McCain knew how painful life could be.

Former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden speaks during a memorial service to celebrate the life of of U.S. Sen.

Biden paid tribute to the two-time Republican presidential candidate, who died on Saturday from brain cancer at age 81, during a 90-minute memorial service at North Phoenix Baptist Church, the latest in a string of commemorative salutes to the Vietnam War hero and venerable politician.

"I hope you take some comfort that because you shared John with all of us your whole life, the world now shares with you the ache of John's death", he noted.

In an official presidential proclamation Monday, President Donald Trump said he had asked the vice president to offer an address at the ceremony honoring McCain.

"We both would end our caucus, and coincidentally, we were approached by our caucus leaders with the same thing: 'Joe, it doesn't look good, you sitting next to John all the time, '" Biden said, as those in attendance laughed. It was McCain's conviction that helped many of us believe, especially during the long winter of this presidency, that his code, what Biden called the "McCain code", can endure.

Biden told McCain's family he understood that there was nothing anyone could do to ease their pain. "Meghan McCain's glare was an appropriate reaction to Pence's hypocrisy", said Rubin.

"You could come to a different conclusion, but where he'd part company with you, [was] if you lacked the basic values, the decency, respect".

Following the ceremony, McCain will lie in state from 1 8 p.m. McCain "could not stand the abuse of power wherever he saw it, in whatever form, in whatever country", Biden said. Biden said their close personal bond abided even when the senator from DE was chosen as the running mate for McCain's Democratic rival in the 2008 presidential race, Barack Obama, who defeated McCain.

"To paraphrase Shakespeare", Biden concluded.
