Defense Secretary James Mattis said some of the human remains returned to the USA from North Korea have been identified.

The identities of the two sets of remains were confirmed through a DNA sample, chest X-rays and dental records, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency Chief Scientist John Byrd told the Military Times.

The Pentagon estimates that of the approximately 7,700 U.S. MIAs from the Korean War, about 5,300 are unaccounted for on North Korean soil.

More than 7000 USA troops who fought in the Korean War are unaccounted for, with approximately 5300 lost in what is now North Korea.

Fifty-five boxes of human remains were delivered from North Korea to Hawaii in late July, a deal made by President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The identifications will chip away at the 7,699 US troops who the USA military says remain unaccounted for from the Korean War. Despite setbacks in the nuclear negotiations, North Korea has maintained its moratorium on weapons testing, has toned down its rhetoric, and attempted to downplay the threatening nature of its arsenal, as was evidenced by its decision not to feature ICBMs in its most recent military parade.

Vice President Mike Pence spoke at the repatriation ceremony at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in August, where he thanked the fallen soldiers for giving "the last full measure of devotion for their families, our freedom, our future, our country". One individual is believed to be African American, based on the remains.

The condition of some of the remains is decidedly better than that of others.

But the next round of identifications might take longer and might be completed "right after Christmas", Byrd added.

The Pentagon has said it is considering the possibility of sending personnel to North Korea to search for more remains.

The US-led United Nations delegation was led by US Air Force Maj.
