Russian bombers flew near Alaska, intercepted by Air Force jets, US military says

The Russian jets never entered USA or Canadian airspace, NORAD said, but it didn't give a precise location as to how close they had come.

Two Russian Tu-95 Bear bombers, which are traditionally armed with a variety of air-launched cruise missiles, accompanied by Su-35 Flanker fighter jets were picked up by USA aircraft "west of mainland Alaska", North American Aerospace Defense Command said in a statement Wednesday.

Two Russian bombers were intercepted by two U.S. F-22 fighter jets near Alaska on Tuesday, said the US military on Wednesday. The last interception came on September 1 near the Aleutian Islands. However, defense officials said the bombers in that flight were supported by aerial refueling tankers. The incident did occur, however, within the U.S. Air Defense Identification Zone, which extends 200 miles off Alaska's coast.

This marks the second time this month a pair of Russian bombers have flown close to Alaska.

They did not fly into USA or Canadian airspace.

No other details of the intercept were disclosed. The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, as first noted by Fox News, released a video Wednesday of two Cold War bombers escorted by fighter aircraft taking off for exercises from an airbase in eastern Russia.

Two U.S. F-22 Raptor fighters met them in global airspace west of Alaska around 10 p.m. Tuesday, NORAD said.

Russian bombers in the past have conducted mock missile attacks against USA missile defenses in Alaska.

The Russian military recently launched its largest military drill since 1981.

The state-run Russian news agency TASS reported Wednesday that Tu-95 bombers practiced launching strategic nuclear cruise missiles that destroyed ground targets at a training base in Buryatia, a region of Russia north of Mongolia.
