Trinidadians in the Carolinas prepare for Hurricane Florence

The storm was reduced to a Category 1 Hurricane just before it barrelled into the US East Coast.

More ominously, forecasters said the onslaught would last for hours and hours because Florence was barely creeping along at 6 mph (9 kph) and still drawing energy from the ocean.

Corps staff worked with Army officials to review dams at Fort Bragg in North Carolina and Fort Jackson in SC to "ensure any effects of Florence on those dams are mitigated", said Ray Alexander, the Corps' inter-agency services chief.

Trinidadians living overseas are vigorously preparing themselves for the hurricane.

It was set to inundate nearly all of North Carolina in several feet of water, State Governor Roy Cooper told a news conference, while National Weather Service forecaster Brandon Locklear predicted up to eight months of rain in two or three days. The agency is also warning people in the evacuation areas to leave stating that "This is not going to be a glancing blow".

Forecasters said "catastrophic" freshwater flooding was expected along waterways far from the coast of the Carolinas.

Heavy rains: parts of the Carolinas could see 50 to 75cm, with isolated areas getting 100cm over seven days along the coast. "We have two boats and all our worldly possessions", said Susan Patchkofsky, who refused her family's pleas to evacuate and stayed at Emerald Isle with her husband.

"We already bought candles, batteries, can food items, water and so on". "We are going to be very very very limited in terms of responding".

"On a scale of 1 to 10, I'm probably a 7" in terms of worry, she said.

Just as Hurricane Florence closes in on the Southeast, the area covered by hurricane-force winds has doubled - meaning far more people will get blasted with winds 74 miles per hour or greater.

Populated coastline: 11 million Americans live in areas under storm watches and warnings. More than 3,000 inmates at North Carolina prisons and juvenile detention centres were moved out of the storm's path.

The hurricane's storm surge is already visibly dramatic and represents an ongoing danger as the tides come in and the storm's winds continue to push more water over land. "Follow advice from [your] local government officials", reads the latest update from the National Weather Service in Charlotte.

An officer inspecting the Triangle Motor Inn found a "basketball-sized hole" in a corner room and firefighters said the building had suffered life-threatening structural damage.

The centre urges people within the affected areas to take all necessary actions to protect life and property from rising water and the potential for other risky conditions.

People are seen inside a shelter run by Red Cross before Hurricane Florence comes ashore in Grantsboro, N.C., September 13, 2018.

Hurricane-force winds extend up to 80 miles from the center of the storm, which is expected to make landfall around 8 a.m. ET on Friday.
