Alderweireld not disappointed to stay at Tottenham amid Man Utd links

Toby Alderweireld insists he never pushed for a summer transfer to Manchester United and was only focused on regaining his place in Tottenham's starting line-up. The Belgian worldwide has iterated that he never wanted to leave Tottenham, and that the rumours suggesting the same were untrue.

The Belgian centre back was linked with Manchester United during the summer, but insisted over the worldwide break that he was never close to leaving Spurs.

The Belgian is into the final year of his contract with Spurs and whilst the club do hold the option to extend his current deal by an extra year, that will invoke a £25m release clause.

Jose Mourinho's Manchester United were known to be tracking the Belgium centre-back and had prepared a hefty package deal for him.

Several names were linked with the Red Devils, with Alderweireld reportedly being the priority for the Portuguese manager.

Ahead of Belgium's Uefa Nations League game against Iceland on Tuesday, Alderweireld discussed the rumours linking him with a move away from Spurs over the summer.

'This summer, I quickly understood Tottenham wanted to keep me.

"At first I struggled to get my place in the team back but being in the first team again is a big positive for me. Everything on my future that has been said by the press is not correct".

Now I am just trying to help Tottenham to the best of my ability. And so, Manchester United could still come back for the Belgian global, although his words suggest he is committed to Tottenham.
