Tennis Umpires reportedly considering Boycott of Serena Williams Matches

Thank you, Serena Williams, for calling out this double standard.

Serena Williams' meltdown at the US Open has lit the fuse for an explosive debate on Sports Sunday with panellist Richard Freedman accusing her of being a poor loser. After sparring with the chair umpire, Williams was given a one-game penalty late in the climactic second set, sealing the win for Osaka.

Williams was given a warning by umpire Carlos Ramos after he caught her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, gesturing-something he later admitted constituted advice from the stands, according to the rules. The warning incensed Williams, not only because coaching hand gestures have become so common in the modern era of tennis and nearly always go unpunished, but especially because it called her character into question. Incensed, Serena, in a classic, bold woman act that usually involves pointing a finger and looking at your subject straight in the eye, boldly told the male umpire "I didn't cheat".

"I have thrown mouthpieces before, had outbursts you might want to take back".

For Osaka, who four years ago took a selfie with Williams outside the same court, the notion that she was the opposing player handed an advantage by the umpire seemed to fill her with agony.

The 23-time Grand Slam victor reacted angrily, insisting she hadn't seen Mourtagolou give advice, to which he later admitted.

Her grievances came after chair umpire Carlos Ramos chose to penalise her with three violation codes that resulted in a one-game penalty.

"Did he have to behave differently only because she was Serena Williams?".

"This is a bulls**t, for umpires being women or men doesn't matter", said the world No 25. "I'm here fighting for women's rights and for women's equality and for all kinds of stuff". It made me feel like it was a sexist remark.

"But in my mind, I really wanted to know what was going on".

The sportswoman is also expected to do something she has never done in front of the camera before.

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) and Women's Tennis Association (WTA), however, supported Williams' accusations that Ramos' actions were based in sexism.

The Japanese star not only walked off court last Saturday with the prestige that comes with winning the nation's most famous tennis tournament, she also got a check for $3.8 million. It was an infraction, whether Williams benefited from the coaching or not.
