An Amazon spokesperson confirmed that the money will all come from Bezos, though there are few details about how the fund will operate.

"September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month and each year Amazon partners with @ACCOrg to raise awareness of childhood cancer - second leading cause of death for kids in the USA between ages 4 and 14', he wrote in an Instagram post shared".

The Day 1 Academies Fund will launch and operate a network of high-quality, full-scholarship, Montessori-inspired pre-schools in low-income and underserved communities, he said.

The private non-profit foundation in its 2016 tax filing reported almost $46 million United States in assets, and giving away $30 million U.S. in grants support its missions in early education, K-12 schools reform and youth leadership development and scholarships. Outside of that, Bezos and his family's known donations have included gifts to Princeton University and Seattle's Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy. Forbes magazine placed him at the top of its list of billionaires for the first time this year, surpassing Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and investor Warren Buffett.

Bezos, and Amazon, have been criticized in Seattle for not doing more to help the needy and have become focal points in the booming region's angry debate about traffic, housing prices and homelessness. His net worth has risen by $64.7 billion this year alone as Amazon's shares have surged.

So, Jeff, from one member of the human species to another, I implore you to not only engage in philanthropy but also try to understand how you can fix Amazon's problems to set a better example. Amazon, it should be said, has responded to these claims before, calling them "inaccurate and misleading".

Now that question has been answered, at least in part.

Amazon's main headquarters building in Seattle is also called Day 1.

It has also won tax breaks in many areas for its warehouses and distribution centres, and has been running a highly publicized effort for a second North American headquarters, prompting proposals for tax reductions and incentives.
