China takes center stage at opening of Russia’s Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok

"Let us sign the peace treaty. and later we will continue to talk about all of our disagreements as friends on the basis of a peace treaty", Putin said at an economic conference in Vladivostok.

Putin and Abe have held numerous meetings over the past few years in a bid to solve the dispute over the islands known in Japan as the Northern Territories.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his South Korean counterpart Lee Nak-yeon have also marked their presence at the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF), which Mr. Putin is hosting.

Russian President Vladimir Putin offered Japanese leader Shinzo Abe a peace treaty without preconditions by the end of the year.

Suga also said Putin had not mentioned the proposal during a summit meeting with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Monday.

Since the mid-20th century, Russian Federation and Japan have been holding consultations in order to clinch a peace treaty as a follow-up to World War II.

But the two leaders found time to flip blini on "Far East Street", an exhibition of the region's cultural and economic achievements.Photos showed Putin and Xi, wearing blue aprons, pouring out batter and turning the pancakes over before eating them with caviar and a shot of vodka.

President Xi highlighted that the two countries share common interests in many global issues, . and called for the need to cooperate more going forward.

Both Abe and Putin say they want a solution to the dispute.

Still, a former Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, Georgy Kunadze, felt this could be political posturing from Putin.

"This stance hasn't changed", he added.

In his remarks on September 12, Putin said concluding a pact would create a better atmosphere and enable Russian Federation and Japan to "continue to resolve all outstanding issues like friends".

As Donald Trump continues to up the ante on a trade war, with the U.S. president recently threatening to place tariffs on all Chinese exports to the United States, Beijing is moving to further solidify its already-close partnership with Russian Federation.

"We've been trying to solve the territorial dispute for 70 years".

The Soviet Union seized the four islands north of Hokkaido and east of Sakhalin in the closing days of World War II.

His comments came just days after confessing that the territorial dispute between Japan and Russian Federation, which has dragged on for decades, was unlikely to be resolved in the near future.
