The war games demonstrate "Russia's focus on exercising large-scale conflict", North Atlantic Treaty Organisation spokesman Dylan White said in late August, stating that the Western alliance had been briefed about Vostk-2018 and would monitor it.

In this photo taken from video provided by the Russian Defence Ministry Press Service on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018, tanks roll during the military exercises in the Chita region, Eastern Siberia, during the Vostok 2018 exercises.

Named Vostok-2018, the rehearsals aim to check the readiness of the Russian armed forces.

"We have trustworthy ties in political, security and defense spheres", said Putin, who also posed for a photo op with his Chinese counterpart to cook up traditional blini pancakes.

"It fits into a pattern we have seen over some time: a more assertive Russian Federation, significantly increasing its defence budget and its military presence".

Russian Federation has started its biggest "war games" since the end of the Soviet Union, which are said to involve nearly 300,000 troops, more than 1,000 aircraft, 36,000 tanks and military vehicles, and dozens of warships.

Strategic bombers of Russia's Aerospace Force Tupolev-95MS have successfully destroyed surface targets at a proving ground in Buryatia with cruise missiles in the Vostok-2018 exercise, the Defense Ministry told the media.

As the maneuvers kicked off, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Russian Federation on Tuesday to attend an economic forum in Vladivostok.

The Russian military has compared the show of force to the USSR's 1981 war games, in which as many as 150,000 Warsaw Pact soldiers took part in "Zapad-81" (West-81).

With 300,000 soldiers, 36,000 vehicles, 1,000 aircraft and 80 ships, the Vostok 2018 exercises will be even bigger than the mock battles fought during the Cold War.

"The fact that the drill is vastly greater in size than previous exercises in the same location is also part of the natural progression of Russia's practice for war", Giles said.

However, sanctions imposed on Moscow by the West in response to the annexation of Crimea in 2014, coupled with tighter trade links, have seen them grow closer in recent years.

Song Zhongping, a Hong Kong-based military commentator, said Beijing, which regards the defence of its sovereignty over most of the South China Sea and the self-ruled island of Taiwan as core interests, needed to strengthen its capabilities in preparation for possible real-life military conflicts.

Since then Moscow has increased the number of its large-scale military exercises in the Caucasus, the Baltic and the Arctic.

Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov argued the exercises were "justified" in "the current global situation" given "aggressive and unfriendly" attitudes towards Russian Federation.

Asked if the U.S.is anxious about a possible military alliance between Russian Federation and China, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis told Pentagon reporters Tuesday that, "I think that nations act out of their interests".
