Projected Path Still Uncertain as Florence Moves Toward Carolinas

S Coastal cities brace for Hurricane Florence

Millions urged to flee inland hours before it was due to announce its arrival with torrential downpours.

.

Florence is now a category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind scale.

Hurricane warnings continue in parts of eastern North Carolina and northern coastal SC.

The warning was issued on Wednesday by the UAE Embassy on its Twitter account.

A Storm Surge Warning means there is a danger of life-threatening inundation, from rising water moving inland from the coastline, during the next 36 hours in the indicated locations. "Get prepared on the East Coast, this is a no-kidding nightmare coming for you".

Hurricane conditions are expected to reach the Carolinas on Friday, says the National Hurricane Center, but tropical force winds are expected to show up somewhere along the coast late Wednesday or Thursday morning.

Then, as the high-pressure system steering Florence weakens, the hurricane is expected to hang out inland for days, showering the region with rain much like Hurricane Harvey did to Houston a year ago.

She said at least 60 to 80 of their 180 rooms are booked by people fleeing from SC or North Carolina, but they have plenty of practice housing evacuees since many leave the Jacksonville beaches when hurricanes pass through the area.

"Don't play games with it".

"We're ready", Cooper said.

Speaking at the White House, Trump said "protection of life is the absolute highest priority".

It is predicted the Carolinas could begin feeling tropical storm force winds early Thursday.

"For a meandering storm, the biggest concern - as we saw with Harvey - is the huge amount rainfall", said Chris Landsea, chief of tropical analysis and forecast branch at the National Hurricane Center.

Moreover, high tides around noon and midnight these next few days will make the storm surges even worse, Samson said.

And, if you're already out of Florence's way but want to help, here's how. Some reactors are undergoing prestorm checks now, and their reactors will be shut down 12 hours before the hurricane arrives, Green said.

Duke Energy Corp expected between 25 percent and 75 percent of its 4 million customers would lose power in the Carolinas.

At 8:00 pm (0000 GMT), the eye of the storm was 335 miles (540 kms) southeast of Wilmington, North Carolina, moving northwest at 16 mph (26 kph).

Across the Carolinas, Virginia and Georgia, businesses are bracing for the economic damage Hurricane Florence is expected to inflict on the area.

A state of emergency has been declared in Georgia, making it the fifth state to do so, as authorities warned of storm surges and catastrophic flooding.

Governor Deal said yesterday: "The state is mobilising all available resources to ensure public safety ahead of Hurricane Florence".

A Storm Surge Watch is in effect for... Similar declarations were made earlier in North and South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia.

In addition to inundating the coast with wind-driven storm surges of seawater as high as 9 feet (2.7 meters) along the Carolina coast, Florence could dump 20 to 30 inches (51-76 cm) of rain, with up to 40 inches (1 metre) in parts of North Carolina, the NHC said.
