Hurricane Florence’s likely path

Hurricane Florence has inundated United States coastal streets with ocean water and left tens of thousands without power, and forecasters say conditions will only worsen as the hulking storm slogs inland.

Latest radar images as Hurricane Florence makes landfall near Wilmington, NC.

The storm's intensity diminished as it neared land, with winds dropping to around 90 miles per hour by nightfall. "Surviving this storm will be a test of endurance, teamwork, common sense and patience". "It's a big one", he said at the White House.

"Don't relax; don't get complacent".

More than 60 people had to be pulled from a collapsing motel at the height of the storm, and many more who defied evacuation orders held out hope of being rescued. Another 400 people were in shelters in Virginia, where forecasts were less dire.

Prisoners were affected, too.

By 1:50 p.m. (1750 GMT) the winds had dropped to 75 miles per hour (120 kph) and the centre was moving west at a 6 miles per hour (10 kph), the NHC said, and parts of North and SC would get as much as 40 inches of rain (1 metre). Rescue swimmers and other ground crew members will head straight to Raleigh, North Carolina, Macy said.

Coastal towns in the Carolinas were largely empty, and schools and businesses closed as far south as Georgia. Hurricane-force winds extended 80 miles (130 kilometers) from its center, and tropical-storm-force winds reached out 195 miles (315 kilometers).

Even though there has been some weakening, Florence will create life-threatening conditions as it moves over the coast.

In a 8AM EDT advisory, the National Hurricane Center reports Florence is about 10 miles south of Wilmington, NC, and making landfall on Friday morning with 80kt sustained winds.

Its surge could cover all but a sliver of the Carolina coast under as much as 11ft of ocean water, and days of downpours could unload more than 3ft of rain, touching off severe flooding.

The heavy rain expected from Hurricane Florence could flood hog manure pits, coal ash dumps and other industrial sites in North Carolina, creating a noxious witches' brew of waste that might wash into homes and threaten drinking water supplies.

Kevin Miller, a 50-year-old electrician, said he planned to ride out the storm at his home near Charleston. "It's going to destroy homes", said Jeff Byard, an official at the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

As Florence drew near, President Donald Trump tweeted that the Federal Emergency Management Agency and first responders are "supplied and ready", and he disputed the official conclusion that almost 3,000 people died in Puerto Rico, claiming the figure was a Democratic plot to make him look bad. Three college football games with Top 25 teams have been called off: East Carolina at No. 11 Virginia Tech, No. 15 West Virginia at NC State and No. 18 Central Florida at North Carolina. "And you don't need power to sling booze", said owner Eli Ellsworth.

The police chief of a barrier island in Florence's approach said he was asking for next-of-kin contact information from the few residents who refused to leave. "We chose to hunker down".

"We have a safe basement and generator that comes on automatically".
