Hurricane Florence is now a powerful Category 4 hurricane and is expected to make a unsafe impact once it makes landfall along the coast of the southeast USA later this week.

"Finally, I ask all Georgians to join me in praying for the safety of our people and all those in the path of Hurricane Florence".

Florence is forecast to significantly weaken as it crawls across central South Carolina Saturday; however, residents inland have been warned to expect life-threatening floods and to be without power for days.

The hurricane center predicts as much as 101 centimeters of rain for some parts of North Carolina and storm surges as high as 4 meters - taller than many houses.

People in areas vulnerable to the unsafe hurricane, particularly those in coastal regions, have fled ahead of the storm.

More than 1,300 flights for Friday had been canceled along the East Coast.

Governors in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia have issued mandatory evacuations and lane reversals.

The centre of the hurricane's eye came ashore at about 7:15 a.m. EDT (1115 GMT) near Wrightsville Beach close to Wilmington, North Carolina, with sustained winds of 90 miles per hour (150 kph), the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said. President Donald Trump declared a state of emergency on the federal level Tuesday for the Carolinas and Virginia. The National Weather Service said about 5.25 million people live in areas under hurricane warnings or watches, and 4.9 million in places covered by tropical storm warnings or watches.

Boarding up his home in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Chris Pennington watched the forecasts and tried to decide when to leave.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for north of Duck, NC, to Cape Charles Light, VA, and for Chesapeake Bay south of New Point Comfort.

But forecasters warned that the widening storm - and the likelihood of it lingering around the coast for days - would bring seawater surging on to land and torrential downpours.

Areas along the coast from Cape Fear to Cape Lookout, NC, including the Neuse, Pamlico, Pungo and Bay rivers may experience storm surges from 9 to 13 feet. However, the surge is expected to be accompanied by large and destructive waves, regardless of when the storm arrives.

"Florence has slowed to a crawl as expected, and this will only exacerbate the flooding situation for the Carolinas from now through Sunday". Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands face possible isolated amounts of 3 inches. It is expected that the hurricane moves on or near the coastline during the night of Thursday through Friday.
