NY primary features Democratic gubernatorial race between Cuomo, Cynthia Nixon

The 10th circle of hell

Gov. Andrew Cuomo is taking some heat from his opponent Cynthia Nixon for holding a rally that was initially closed to the media.

"I am the most aggressive governor in the United States of America in taking him on", he said in a campaign speech Monday in Syracuse that didn't include one mention of Nixon's name.

She added that she thinks Cuomo knew about the mailer despite his denials. But Siena pollster Steven Greenberg said surveys show Cuomo remains the pick of a majority of female voters, voters under 35 and voters who describe themselves as liberal. The latest poll has him beating Nixon by 41 points.

While a state Democratic Party official said earlier in the week that it would let Nixon send out a mailer of her choosing to the same population, her campaign manager, Rebecca Katz, told Gothamist, "there's been no formal offer", and they received no response to their request for a robocall denouncing the flier's incorrect claims.

With two days to go until New York Democrats head to the polls, Nixon, who has refused corporate donations, knows she's the underdog against a well-known, well-funded, powerful incumbent.

While it certainly seems that Nixon has Cuomo rattled, it appears he has little to worry about in Thursday's vote.

"He is going hard, but I think what that shows is that he is actually scared because he understands that we've got a real hunger for progressive change in NY state and he doesn't have a record to run on", Ms. Nixon said Wednesday on the "Breakfast Club" radio show.

The victor of the primary will face Republican Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro, Green Party candidate Howie Hawkins and former Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner, an independent, in the November general election. "We have said all along that the mailer was inappropriate and a mistake and have worked with the state party to change the approval process going forward to ensure this never happens again". Cuomo's inability to win voters over on the issue - and only a slight 2-point lead on "advancing progressive issues" - are the only two areas where the poll shows Cuomo looking vulnerable.

Political observers say that turnout is an overriding factor, but if damaging stories continue to come out about Cuomo, whether concerning the bridge, the mailer or other issues, "it's likely to affect at the margins the spread", said Levenson. His preferred pick for attorney general, New York City Public Advocate Letitia James, is mired in a four-way primary. But she's invited to my next bbq/family gathering and if she's running for anything...

Several competitive primaries for the state Legislature will also be decided, including some high-profile contests featuring challengers hoping to retire state senators who were former members in the Independent Democratic Conference, a now defunct faction that broke with mainline Democrats to support GOP control of the chamber.
