The new Quinnipiac University survey has the president's approval at 38 percent favorable, 54 percent unfavorable.

The 51 percent mark represented a significant drop when compared to results just under two years ago, according to the Quinnipiac University Poll. The company surveyed likely voters through automated calls made to landlines, which means those polled tend to be older in age, and more likely to vote for the Republican Party.

The latest CNN poll has Trump's approval rate at 36 percent, down from 42 last month.

Trump's average approval rating is the lowest for any president in modern polling since the 1940s, according to ABC News.

The CNN poll released on Monday showed that only 32 percent of respondents believed that Trump was "honest and trustworthy".

Heaping further pressure on poor Republican numbers is Trump's unpopularity.

When it comes to the economy, meanwhile, 70 percent of Americans in Quinnipiac's poll say it is good or excellent, while CNN's poll found 69 percent calling the economy "good" and 26 percent "very good".

Democrats hold a slim lead over Republicans on a poll of US adults' preferences for which party they want controlling the House after November's midterm elections.

As for the president's overall approval rating, Quinnipiac puts it nationwide at 38 percent, while 84 percent of registered Republicans support the president.

The president's party often gets clobbered in midterm election years. In August, Trump's campaign manager Paul Manafort was convicted on charges of financial fraud.

Trump was also the subject of an op-ed written by a claimed senior administration official and published by The New York Times on Wednesday.

According to FiveThirtyEight, Democrats have a 4 in 5 chance (79 percent) of taking control of the House post the midterm elections.
