The 2019 Lexus ES Gets Cameras Instead of Sideview Mirrors, but Only in Japan

With Lexus's "Digital Outer Mirrors", the typical glass mirror pods are replaced by rear-facing digital cameras.

The "Digital Outer Mirror" system, which Lexus claims is a world first on a production auto, shows feeds from two exterior cameras on a pair of 5.0-inch screens mounted at the base of the front pillars. The cameras even automatically adjust their field of focus when a turn signal is activated, or the vehicle is put into reverse.

The new camera-based rearview mirrors on the Japanese-market 2019 Lexus ES 300h. Interestingly, the brand says the digital mirrors are shaped to "resist the accumulation of raindrops and snow".

The wing mirrors are replaced with small cameras mounted on the outside of the vehicle, with small screens displaying the feed from these cameras on the inside.

The technology will debut in the redesigned ES sedan that goes on sale in October.

There's also the enhanced view software, which displays the footage on the monitors inside the cabin in high quality even at night and inclement weather. The cameras mounted on the front doors are far smaller and thinner than mirrors, for one thing, which helps improve forward visibility and reduces wind noise at highway speeds.

The development of cars without conventional side view mirrors has been proposed for some time now due to their number of advantages.
