Microsoft really doesn't want you to abandon Edge on Windows 10

The pop-up reads, "Microsoft Edge is the faster, safer browser designed for Windows" and offers two options, namely, Open Microsoft Edge and Install Anyway. Microsoft trying to tempt people back to Edge through alerts like this isn't really anything new, but this time, the pop-up shows when you open the installer for another browser. When users attempt to download Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome, they are now confronted with a pop-up window warning them that Edge is "faster" and "safer".

A test feature run by Microsoft that had warned Windows 10 Insiders against installing Chrome and Firefox, will not be part of the actual update slated for October, the media reported. At least Microsoft gives you the option to turn off warnings like this, but that doesn't make the situation much better.

While the warning does not block the installation, it is a blatant move from Microsoft to try and stop users from downloading a rival's Web browser. It's clear Microsoft doesn't know, because it's resorted to using annoying pop-up warnings when users try to install another browser. I mean, really, really wants you to use it.

Instead of disabling the app recommendations by default, Microsoft seems to be enabling them by default. A user who initiates the installation of a browser does so on objective. When you're on a laptop, Windows 10 tells you that Chrome is draining your battery. If that's true, we don't imagine this process will make it into the next Windows 10 update.

This version of Windows 10 is now only available to Windows 10 Insiders, but will be rolled out to the public as part of Microsoft's Windows 10 October 2018 update.

The tech giant also tried a similar push to force Windows 10 Mail users to use Edge for all email links, but the company reversed the change after a backlash, the report noted.

The message that pops up calls itself a "warning", but the only reason it's warning you to use Edge is that Microsoft would prefer you do so. This is an escalation in the war between Edge, Chrome, and Firefox.
