Mets' Wright to return for final game September 29

New York Mets infielder David Wright will be activated by the team for its final homestand

Wright will be activated for the homestand beginning September 25 and start at third base September 29 against the Miami Marlins.

David Wright will finally make his return to the Mets this month.

It would be his first major league game since May 2016.

With that in mind, Wright will forever be remembered as a key player in Mets history, and seeing him give his conference Thursday was rough. "To the fans, words can't address my gratitude".

The 35-year-old is scheduled to play on the second to last day of the regular season against Miami.

The team said Wright is not officially retiring, but he would be medically unable to play moving forward.

Here's Wright addressing the plan for the rest of his time with the Mets.

"I don't see (more) as a possibility", Wright told reporters about playing in 2019. He began his latest comeback in August at Class A St. Lucie, hitting a combined.171 with a double and two RBIs in 41 at-bats during 10 games for St. Lucie and two with Triple-A Las Vegas.

"It's debilitating to play baseball", Wright admitted. "Whether it's my back, my neck, my shoulder, some days that pain in any one of those three areas, or all three of the areas, can be moderate and manageable".

In 13 seasons with the Mets, Wright is a career.296 hitter with 242 home runs and 970 RBI. He earned $20 million this season, a portion of which the Mets have recouped via insurance while he's been on the disabled list.
