ME state economist Amanda Rector says the state's latest household income levels increased by a larger percentage than the rest of New England, making up ground.

A help wanted sign is posted at a taco stand in Solana Beach, California, U.S., July 17, 2017. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that the median household income in ME has increased by about 4 percent. Median household income is generally viewed as the best gauge of how a typical middle-class home is faring financially.

Still, the 1.4 percent drop is consistent with national trends which saw the poverty rate for the entire country drop from 12.7 percent a year ago to 12.3 percent. The percentage of Americans without health insurance was essentially unchanged from 2016 to 2017 - staying at about 8.8 percent, or 28.5 million people - despite the overall economic boom.

The Census report showed the poverty threshold in 2017 was an income of $24,858 for a family of four.

The median USA household income rose for a third straight year in 2017 and the poverty rate declined further, government data showed on Wednesday.

The number of Americans in poverty also did not change dramatically from the previous year, with the official poverty rate falling slightly from 12.7 percent in 2016 to 12.3 percent in 2017, according to the Census.

The unemployment rate has since declined to a near 18-year low of 3.9 percent and the economy continued to churn out jobs at a relatively brisk pace.
