The rest only had minor injuries.

A Czech woman suffered back injuries and was transferred to hospital, a coast official said.

Witnesses said a large rock fell from a cliff into the sea at Navagio, known as Shipwreck Beach, creating a large wave that capsized small boats, local media reported.

Video footage shows beach-goers running in panic as part of a cliff peels off the rock wall at the end of Navagio beach, tumbling to the sand. O'Connell estimates there are around 400 to 500 people in the area when the rockfall occurred and around a dozen tourist boats were out in the bay.

He said: "The rock that fell would be like a four-storey building falling on to the beach".

"A giant wave hit the small boats and debris hit people on the beach", she said. O'Connell described the chaos, with families scrambling to rush to safety on the boats in the bay.

Authorities were seeking to determine whether there were any people missing.

Rescue crews with sniffer dogs were searching the beach on the Greek island of Zante last night for possible victims following the huge landslide.

There were many tourists with children at the beach who were evacuated on boats.

British woman Wendy Thorpe said she was on a boat with her daughter when the cliff collapsed and there was an "almighty crash".
