Live Kofi Annan gets military burial after 'glowing' memorial event

Per The Punch report sighted by YEN.com.gh, the UN General Assembly would hold a commemorative meeting to pay tribute to the former Secretary-General on Friday, at the UN headquarters in NY.

"My love, you are now back home, we stopped after your own journey, may you rest in peace".

Among the dignitaries present are Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary-General; AU Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat; President of Ghana Nana Akufo Addo; Ivorian president Alhassane Ouattara, Ethiopian president Dr Mulato Teshome; Nigerien Prime Minister Brigi Rafini; Namibian president Hage Geingob; Angolan Vice-president and over a dozen other leaders from the continent and beyond.

Annan, who was a Nobel peace laureate and the world body's first leader from sub-Saharan Africa, died on August 18 after a brief illness.

He also commended the family of Kofi Annan for giving him to Ghana and the world at large.

Born in Kamasi, Ghana, on April 8, 1938, Annan took the baton as the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations from Egyptian diplomat Boutrous Boutrous-Ghali in December 1996.

The king of Ghana's Asante people, Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II, awarded Annan the title Busumuru in 2012 to honour his role as an global diplomat. "We were rewarded with his wisdom", she said. He was aged of 80.

Guterres concluded: "As we face the headwinds of our troubled and turbulent times, let us always be inspired by the legacy of Kofi Annan - and guided by the knowledge that he will continue speaking to us, urging us on towards the goals to which he dedicated his life and truly moved our world".

He was widely credited for raising the world body's profile in global politics during his two terms in office, facing challenges including wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Annan devoted nearly his entire working life to the United Nations, steering the organisation through multiple wars in the Middle East, the breakup of former Yugoslavia and a raft of other crises over a career that spanned more than five decades. "His was a life well-lived", President Akufo-Addo added.

"He gave his life to make peace where there was conflict, to defending the voiceless who were powerless, to promote virtue where there was evil".

Nonetheless, Annan maintained his stature in world diplomacy and in 2016 was appointed to head a United Nations commission to investigate the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar.

He managed to broker the deal that led to formation of the Grand Coalition Government, pulling Kenya from the edge of the precipice.

The former queen of the Netherlands, Princess Beatrix, and her daughter-in-law Princess Mabel, who were close friends of Annan, were among the mourners.
