Gov. Roy Cooper is reminding North Carolinians that Hurricane Florence is a storm that shouldn't be taken lightly.

"Don't play games with it".

A sign is seen on a boarded up vacation rentals office near Wrightsville beach, North Carolina on September 12, 2018.

Forecasters are predicting that Florence will make landfall in the Carolinas late Thursday or early Friday as a slightly weakened but still unsafe Category 3 hurricane.

The National Hurricane Center says Hurricane Florence is expected to bring life-threatening storm surge and rainfall to portions of the Carolinas and mid-Atlantic states.

No storm watches or warnings are in effect for Georgia.

I know that North Carolinians are a hardy bunch and we've seen nor'easters and hurricanes before, but this one is different.

"The state is mobilizing all available resources to ensure public safety ahead of Hurricane Florence", Deal said in a news release.

The hurricane was about 470 miles (755 km) east-southeast of Myrtle beach SC, with maximum sustained winds of 125 miles per hour (205 km/h), the Miami, Florida-based weather forecaster said.

Hurricane conditions will likely hit on Friday, but tropical storm conditions will arrive on Thursday, according to the hurricane center.

Motorists drive down I-40 westbound as the eastbound road is empty in advance of Hurricane Florence near Suttontown, North Carolina. The power is going to be off for weeks. "This is going to be a Mike Tyson punch to the Carolina coast".

The threat has sparked a rush of evacuation efforts in SC and North Carolina, with more than a million people urged to get out of Florence's way. Cars and trucks full of people and belongings streamed inland. But it's such a large storm that the rain will keep coming down in the region no matter where it wanders.

While Hurricane Florence has sparked state of emergency and mass evacuation, a very unfortunate weather graphic has managed to put a smile on those preparing for the storm.

The bank confirmed in a statement to BNN Bloomberg it has closed 14 of 61 branches in SC and two of its 14 locations in North Carolina as of noon Tuesday. Most other beachgoers were long done.

If you're not under evacuation orders, Ready.gov recommends having at least three days' worth of food, water, medications and emergency supplies for people and pets. He also asked that residents clear the exterior of their homes.
