Chelsea center-back David Luiz has praised new manager Maurizio Sarri's positive approach to life and football. The 59-year-old replaced Antonio Conte earlier in the summer after the latter was axed by the Blues following a mediocre campaign last term.

Speaking about Sarri, Luiz said, "First of all he's a great person, great as a human", the Brazil global said of Sarri in an interview with Chelsea magazine.

'It's very hard. The gap last season was 30 points so I think to go above 30 points in one season is very, very hard.

Willian, who had a hard relationship with former manager Antonio Conte, was heavily linked with a departure from Chelsea in the summer transfer window amid reported interest from Barcelona.

Not for the first time, failings on the pitch lead to a poisonous mood among Chelsea FC players, which forced the hand of owner Roman Abramovich.

Makelele, who won two league titles with Chelsea, knows it will be tough to dethrone Manchester City but is confident Sarri can lead the west London outfit to glory.

After many anecdotes have emerged about Sarri's enigmatic operation, Luiz has confirmed the mood at Stamford Bridge is a world away from what it was just months ago. "These five years have been very good for me and I am proud to be a Chelsea player".

Luiz was something of a forgotten man for Chelsea under Antonio Conte last season, falling down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge and making only nine Premier League starts.

"So, I believe in his philosophy and then after that he is a great coach".

And with no Champions League football to contend with this season, Sarri can possibly put all of his eggs into the Premier League basket.

Chelsea will also kick start their quest to win the Europa League next week with a trip to take on Greek side PAOK in their group match.
