Cystic fibrosis activist Claire Wineland dies aged 21 after double lung transplant

Claire Wineland’s popular social media posts about her illness were both funny and frank

A young social media star who inspired legions of fans with her optimism despite a lifelong battle with cystic fibrosis has died at 21-a week after receiving a new set of lungs in a transplant, reports People.

"After a week of intensive care and various life-saving procedures, it became clear that it was Claire's time to go", the statement read. Claire had suffered a massive stroke on August 26 after her 9-hour double lung transplant surgery.

"(Claire) was not in any pain and the medical staff said it was the most peaceful passing they had ever witnessed", they said in a statement posted on the Claire's Place Foundation Facebook. Claire created her own foundation, Claire's Place, which heightens "public awareness about Cystic Fibrosis and improve the quality of life for the families it affects by providing education, life skills, inspiration, and positive support, when she was just 13 years old".

We invite you to share condolences for Claire Wineland in our Guest Book. There is no cure for the disease, but Wineland had hoped that a double lung transplant would improve her prognosis and extend her life.

But Wineland refused to be cowed or defined by her illness, becoming a social media star, writer, and speaker in her teenage years with her honest insights into illness and mortality, mixed with a good portion of fun and typical teenage selfies.

According to CNN, Wineland told her parents when she was 18 that she did not want a lung transplant but changed her mind earlier this year, when her health drastically declined.

In the words of our precious founder Claire Wineland: "Death is Inevitable".

"It hurts everything inside of me to make this video".

"In Claire fashion, she is an organ donor".

"When you're talking to someone who has a disability or has an illness, expect that they live lives like yours", Wineland explained in a January 2015 video titled "Tips for Interacting with a Sick Person".

Wineland gained popularity for her videos, where she candidly discussed the hardest parts of CF, often with humor and a smile.

According to the US Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, more than 70,000 people suffer from the condition worldwide. Her mom also said that Claire's "corneas and tissue was recovered and she will be able to enhance the life of up to 50 people".

While the illness differs greatly from person to person, the predicted median survival age is close to 40.

Among those paying tribute on Twitter were fellow YouTubers Shane Dawson, who said his "heart hurts so bad", and Casey Neistat, who called her "truly one of the greats".
