Could seniors boost their longevity with the Mediterranean diet?

The Med lunch

Carried out by researchers at the Department of Epidemiology and Prevention of the I.R.C.C.S. Neuromed, in Italy, the new study looked at 5,200 people over the age of 65 who were participating in the Moli-sani Study, a large-scale study which investigates the risk factors for cardiovascular disease and cancer, including the role of the Mediterranean diet.

Turns out the humble olive oil, a favourite drizzled over salads and stirred through pasta dishes alike, is better than Viagra when it comes to helping men in the bedroom.

Sticking to an olive oil-rich diet also helps keep men trim around the waist, which is a plus because obesity has been linked to lower levels of the sex hormone, testosterone.

While Viagra can only have short term effects, this diet is a long lasting solution as compared to drugs.

Researchers found that a diet rich in fruit, vegetables, nuts, beans, fish and olive oil, but low in meat, dairy foods and alcohol, reduced the risk of an early death in people over 65 by 25 per cent. About 1 million Aussie men of all ages experience issues, although it is more prevalent in older men.

Just 20 per cent of the men she studied had erectile dysfunction - well below the 52 per cent expected in that age group. The diet has a positive impact on the health of the aorta, a large artery which distributes blood from the heart to the rest of the body, she added. "We already knew that the Mediterranean diet is able to reduce the risk of mortality in the general population, but we did not know whether it would be the same specifically for elderly people. Erectile dysfunction is a common problem, which can cause problems in relationships".

But not all men respond to the drug, and many others dislike having to take a pill during romantic moments.

Dr. Chrysohoou elaborated, "Of all of the components of the Med diet, it is the olive oil that has a specific effect on aortic dilatation and sexual function as well".

And those who had the diet closest to the Mediterranean ideal were protected even further.
