Chinese restaurant lose $288m after a dead rat was found in hotpot

A popular Chinese restaurant chain has lost around $190m (£145m) in market value after a pregnant woman found a dead rat in her soup.

Mr Ma also alleged that one of the staff had suggested his wife get an abortion if she was anxious about the baby's health, and offered him 20,000 yuan for the procedure.

The husband, identified only as Mr. Ma by local outlet Kankan News, said a staffer had the gall to say his wife should get an abortion if she was anxious about the baby, offering over $2,000 for the procedure. The outlet initially offered her compensation of 5,000 yuan ($729).

Xiabu Xiabu's market value dropped to its lowest level in nearly a year as pictures of the dead rat being fished out of a broth were circulated on social media.

The outlet in Shandong has been temporarily shut down following the find last week.

Health officials investigated the restaurant, but found no traces of rats. "I'm never going to eat hotpot outside again", said one user.

By the close of trading on Tuesday, shares in the chain's parent company, Xiabuxiabu Catering Management, had fallen almost 12.5 per cent, at one point dropping to their lowest in nearly a year.

Ma said he and his wife went to the hospital where she had a checkup to ensure the baby was healthy.

A customer's sickening meal-time discovery has wiped $264 million off a restaurant chain's sharemarket value. "Is a life worth only 20,000 yuan?"

Hotpots are prepared with a simmering pot of soup stock at the dining table and contain a variety of east Asian foodstuffs.

They put out a statement Saturday saying they'd "ruled out" that lack of hygiene caused the rat to end up in the soup - but then deleted it.

Xiabu Xiabu said in a statement on Sept 8 that it had "always placed great emphasis on food security and would make any necessary improvements".
