An unidentified gunman killed five people, before turning the gun on himself, in Bakersfield, California on Wednesday police said.

A man went on a shooting rampage in California on Wednesday (Sept 12), killing five people including his wife, before taking his own life, a police spokesman told AFP.

Local media are reporting the man approached the trucking business and shot a man before shooting his wife.

Another person arrived on the scene and opened fire on the gunman.

The husband then drove to a residence on Breckenridge Road and shot dead two people.

The gunman, who was not identified, then went to a home nearby and shot and killed two more people.

He then halted a vehicle with a woman and child inside before stealing the auto.

A deputy eventually confronted the suspect in a parking lot, at which point the gunman shot himself in the chest, Sheriff Youngblood said.

The gunman's identity was not immediately released, and it was also not immediately known how he was related to the victims other than his wife.

Police said the final report in this case could take a long time, as there are 30 witnesses to this heinous crime-all of which need to be interviewed. The deputy who confronted the man was wearing a body camera.

A deputy pulled him over on a highway and confronted the suspect with his gun drawn, Youngblood said.

"It's highly unusual to have six people killed in one incident", the sheriff said.

"Obviously, these are not random shootings", said Youngblood, but could not elaborate on the possible motive of the attacker.
