Apple says tariffs on Chinese goods will raise prices for USA consumers

While Ford might choose not to build the Focus in China, it does have a multiple number of plants in other countries it can choose to build the small hatchback in.

For instance, as CNBC reported, the Koch Network launched a six-figure ad campaign, meant to campaign against Trump's tariffs.

However, a Ford spokesman Mike Levine indicated that there isn't a good a business case to build the low-margin, niche model in the U.S. It's a recurring threat Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook has heard from the White House, but a particular distraction in the days leading up to news of three new iPhones.

Since then, though, Trump has threatened an additional $267 billion of tariffs on China, a move revealed Friday that could cover virtually all Chinese-made goods entering the United States.

Chinese officials prepare the flags for the China-U.S. bilateral meeting at the G20 leaders summit in Hamburg, Germany July 8, 2017.

Furthermore, as the Huffington Post reported, citing federal statistics, US trade deficit with China, and the European Union has jumped to a five-month high, in spite of the tariffs.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said: "If the United States side obstinately clings to its course and takes any new tariff measures against China, then the Chinese side will inevitably take countermeasures to resolutely protect our legitimate rights". "We hope, instead, that you will reconsider these measures and work to find other, more effective solutions that leave the USA economy and USA consumer stronger and healthier than ever before", Apple said.

Some components for Apple products, including glass from manufacturers like Corning, are made in the United States, the company has said. It said some of the parts it relies on for product development, including processors and research equipment, would also be hit by the tariffs.

Intel Corp., the world's second-largest chipmaker, weighed in supporting Apple's opposition to the tariffs and broadening the argument.

In addition, the chip industry is a source of trade surplus for the USA, including with China, Intel argued. "This auto can now be BUILT IN THE USA and Ford will pay no tariffs!".

However, the company's letter adds that every product of theirs "contains parts or materials from the United States and is made with equipment from USA based suppliers".

Apple (AAPL) gleaned almost 20% of its total fiscal 2017 revenue, or $44.8 billion, from China.
