Amir Khan Survives Early Knockdown Dominates Samuel Vargas

After his exciting but flawed points win over Samuel Vargas in Birmingham on Saturday, Khan seemed to prefer a clash with faded legend Manny Pacquiao, his former sparring partner.

Eddie Hearn - who promotes both Brook and Khan - said the domestic bout between his fighters "has to happen next or it never will".

Fresh off a first round stoppage win over Phil Lo Greco, Khan returned to the ring against the durable Colombian/Canadian at the welterweight limit hoping to make a statement and it once again turned into a classic contest for the man from Bolton.

But incredibly, with the fight seemingly under control, Vargas delivered on his pre-bout promise that he would find the former world champion's fragile chin, landing a right hand to send Khan crashing down.

"He caught me with a right overhand, right on the button". The fight would continue with Khan outlanding Vargas and being the aggressor throughout the last 10 rounds.

Hearn will meet Khan, Brook and Pacquiao's handlers in the next fortnight, disclosing that he may even attempt to purvey a two-fight deal with Pacquiao, the eight-weight world champion and serving senator in the Philippines. Although Vargas tried to capitalize on Khan's momentary defensive lapses, Khan still proved too much for him.

"Manny and I trained together and he's a southpaw".

"I want to fight by the end of the year; 147 pounds is the division". It was his first fight in almost two years since an injury.

From there, Khan used his jab and quick combinations on the inside to outbox Vargas, who was bleeding heavily from the nose.

Luckily for Khan, he was able to get his legs back underneath him again and listened to the advice of new head trainer Joe Goossen, who urged him to "calm down".

"I thought it was going to be a lot more work". He's the fastest fighter I've ever seen.

The decision was not in doubt, but many were left unsure whether this performance shows Khan can become one of the leading lights at welterweight. I want Manny Pacquiao.
