Amazon’s Jeff Bezos launches US$2 billion fund to help the homeless

Bezos to launch network of preschools 'The child will be the customer'

"September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month", he wrote in an Instagram post shared about 10 hours ago, explaining that every year, Amazon ties up with the American Childhood Cancer Organisation to raise awareness of childhood cancer, which is the second leading cause of death for kids in the USA between ages 4 and 14. Previous to the creation of the Day One Fund, Bezos and his family had donated only $135 million to charities, including the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, a nonprofit providing scholarships for the children of parents who immigrated the USA illegally and most recently to a bi-partisan organization that gives campaign support to veterans running for political office.

Mr Bezos - reportedly worth more than $164bn - has faced criticism for not doing more philanthropic work.

Insanely rich human being Jeff Bezos announced today his intention to do something he rarely ever does: philanthropy. "The media is going to be fine", Bezos said, according to AFP, before paraphrasing Post editor Marty Baron: "The administration may be at war with us, but we are not at war with the administration".

Some analysts have suggested Amazon could face antitrust scrutiny over its growing power in the economy, and President Donald Trump has accused the company of taking advantage of the Postal Service, despite studies suggesting the internet giant's deal has been beneficial to the USA government postal operator. "September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month", he wrote saying Amazon employees around the globe will be wearing pjs to work to show their solidarity and support to children suffering from the deadly disease.

The fund will also launch a network of "full scholarship" preschools based in underserved communities.

"We will build an organization to directly operate these schools". We're going to be obsessively, compulsively focused on the child.

"It's risky to demonize the media", Bezos said. They call their project the "Bezos Day One Fund". The child will be the customer. "The secret sauce of Amazon - the number one thing that has made us successful has by far is obsessive, compulsive focus on the customer".

More than a year after putting out an open call for suggestions about what to do with his spectacular wealth, Jeff Bezos has come back with a decision.

Avo Makdessian, a vice president at the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, a non-profit that manages donations for philanthropists including many tech billionaires, said he hoped Bezos' pledge would help inspire other wealthy Americans - as well as the government - to take similar action.
