A second person has been struck down with the deadly monkeypox virus just days after health officials revealed the first ever case had reached the UK.

The first patient tested positive last week after falling ill at a naval base in Cornwall, and has since been transferred to the infectious disease unit at the Royal Free Hospital in London.

Both patients are however said to be receiving appropriate care at Royal Infectious University, an expert respiratory infectious disease centre.

"We know that in September 2017 Nigeria experienced a large sustained outbreak of monkeypox and since then sporadic cases have continued to be reported", he said.

Nigeria suffered the largest documented outbreak of monkeypox past year, four decades after the country's last confirmed cases of the disease. "Severe cases occur more commonly among children and are related to the extent of virus exposure, patient health status and severity of complications", the World Health Organization said. The NCDC has also been working closely with states across the country to strengthen surveillance, detection and response to cases of Monkeypox.

Monkeypox is a rare viral infection similar to human smallpox, which has been eradicated in the 1980s.

These include fever, headache, muscle aches, backache, swollen lymph nodes, chills and exhaustion.

While Monkeypox is more deadly than diseases like Chickenpox, it can be potentially fatal, with 10 percent of people succumbing as a result.

Scientists are still unsure if the disease is transmitted by monkeys or via rodents.

Following the recent report of the two cases in the UK, NCDC has been working with the UK's public health agency; Public Health England (PHE), the public health departments in the affected states and other partners in Nigeria to investigate these cases. Soon after, patients develop a "pox" rash, with lesions that often appear over the face and trunk.

It can pass between humans via droplets in the air, and by touching the skin of an infected individual, or touching objects contaminated by them. At present the PHE has said in a statement the there is no connection between these two patients and the second patient could not have contracted the infection from the first. This rash can form blisters, which crust over, before the scab peels off.

Health authorities have monitored the outbreak since the first confirmed case in the UK.

"People without symptoms are not considered infectious but as a precaution, those who have been in close proximity are being contacted to ensure that if they do become unwell they can be treated quickly", the government agency has advised.
