Leonys Martín battling life-threatening bacterial infection but has improved to stable condition

Cleveland Indians outfielder Leonys Martin is recovering in stable condition from a bacterial infection that was considered life threatening a few days ago.

"Leonys had a bacterial infection that entered his blood stream and when it entered his blood stream it produced toxins", said Antonetti to Cleveland.com. Those toxins did damage to his internal organs and the functioning of those organs was compromised, and it was severe.

The Tribe released an update on Martin's health on Tuesday. saying he's "made considerable progress and is now in stable condition".

Cleveland acquired Martin and starting pitcher Kyle Dowdy from Detroit for shortstop prospect Willi Castro just before the non-waiver trade deadline.

"The medical team is optimistic that he will make a full recovery, but progress is expected to be slow", the team says.

Martin remains hospitalized in the Cleveland Clinic, seven days after he fell ill following a game.

"It can't be transferred from one person to the next, but the bacteria somehow entered his bloodstream", Antonetti said.

'He's got a long path to get to full health in front of him.

Martin had been placed Thursday on the 10-day disabled list and outfielder Greg Allen was called up from Class AAA Columbus to take his place.

"We'll continue to spend the month of August looking for opportunities to improve our team", Antonetti said last week. "I'm not sure we will know how".

Antonetti offered that Martin still faces a long recovery period and may not play again this season. For the season he has a slash line of.255/.323/.425 and 11 home runs.

Antonetti noted to reporters Martin was able to communicate with his family, as well as sit in a chair for a couple of hours Sunday. "We haven't really even thought about baseball yet", he said.
