Zverev suffers more slam misery as Gulbis' run continues

Fourth seed Alexander Zverev defeated American Taylor Fritz in five sets to reach the third round at Wimbledon after the match had been suspended overnight when bad light stopped play.

The victory over Zverev was his sixth in a row over the past two weeks.

"I saw that he was getting exhausted in the fifth set", said the Latvian, smiling.

"Honestly, I think for the first time in a long time it was. like, I had no idea what my draw was and all of a sudden I came in here the other day, it was like, so if you win, then you play this person (Serena)", she told reporters. The match today showed I can't take anything for granted.

German Julia Goerges, who had lost in the opening round in her previous five Wimbledon appearances, edged past Czech Barbora Strycova 7-6 (3) 3-6 10-8 in just under three hours on Court Two.

It is a great mystery as to why the young German has failed to produce at Grand Slam level despite his prodigious results elsewhere. "After the second set, I actually went to throw up during the toilet break", he said. Of course, today I found a way better than he did. "Probably my experience and fitness kicked in".

The same was true for Roger Federer, who saw off Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets to reach the second week of the tournament for the 16th time in his career.

Gulbis' win on Saturday was his third successive five-setter having also played three matches in qualifying.

He will next face Ernests Gulbis. He possesses serious power however and brought it all to bear here, blasting 18 aces and 61 winners.

Nadal's powerful forehand and his effectiveness on serve - winning more than 80 per cent of the first and second serve put in play during the second set - proved more than de Minaur could handle.

Edmund appeared to be riding a wave of euphoria generated by England's World Cup quarter-final win against Sweden as he outplayed the Serbian former World No. 1 in the first set.

He won 10 of the final 11 games of the match and by the end was playing brilliantly, sending rasping backhand winners down the line and landing 130mph serves. There was an element of ill fortune about this result, given his bout of illness, but he must start to find an easier path through the early rounds of a Slam if he is to become the champion he was surely born to be.

Zverev by contrast cut a disconsolate, bedraggled figure.
