Woman dependent on oxygen tank dies after company cuts power

Linda Daniels died Thursday after the terminally-ill patient’s power was turned off

Daniels, whose condition required her to use an electric oxygen machine to breathe, was suddenly without the technology keeping her alive.

Linda Daniels, 68, suffered from congestive heart failure and died seven hours after power to her house was shut off because of an overdue bill.

"We put one ice pack here by her side and one on the other side". "She was horrified. We were all horrified".

"We panicked. They cut the power off on what had to be the hottest day of the summer", she said.

'And she's a senior.

A source involved in the rescue mission who saw two of the four boys walk out of the cave told Reuters that they looked exhausted but healthy, adding that one even looked "vivacious and fresh".

Linda's two children and granddaughter say they don't know why the utility company turned the power off.

"Extreme heat and cold with climate change will only make inequality and injustice worse", Cecil Corbin-Mark of WE ACT for Environmental Justice said following the NAACP report. Daniels' oxygen needed to be plugged into an electrical outlet.

"As part of our policy, PSE&G had notified this customer numerous times that their account was in arrears and that they would be scheduled for a service termination unless the account was made current", Jim Namiotka, a PSE&G spokesman, told NJ.com. "I gave him $500 and they still cut off the utilities".

The company says they were unaware of Daniels' medical needs, and they are reviewing their records.

PSEG claims it attempted to notify the customer several times that their account was behind and the service would be terminated.

But Desiree said the utility company, PSEG, told her to stop calling them because there were too many tickets in the system.

Daniels' daughter, Desiree Washington, said family members called PSE&G throughout the day, pleading with them to turn the power back on. "We want to ensure it doesn't happen again, and we can not have our senior population in jeopardy like that".

"Because there was no response from the customer, the customer was shut off".

Her daughter said she had made good faith payments citing that a $300 payment was sent in April, a $450 was sent following that, and July 3, two days before Daniels died, a $500 payment was made on the account.

As Newark Police investigate the matter, Desiree said she may sue, but for now she's focused on funeral preparations and she and her family begin the process of saying goodbye to their beloved mother on Wednesday.
