Vettel wrecks Hamilton's home party with stunning Ferrari win

After labouring with neck pain on Saturday, Sebastian Vettel found the flawless tonic 24 hours later - matching Alain Prost's total of 51 Grand Prix victories and denying main rival Lewis Hamilton a record-setting win in his home race.

"The accident was unfair basically, because it's the second time a Ferrari hits us in the first corner, and it's not amusing".

Vettel in contrast was rewarded for a brilliant start in which he overtook Hamilton within metres on the opening straight. "I gave it 1000 per cent and I didn't have any energy at the end", said Hamilton.

Ferrari, winners with championship leader Sebastian Vettel, dismissed the suggestion and others also jumped to their defence.

"Leaving aside the misfortune of the first lap, it is intriguing to speculate how the final part of the race would have played out without the Safety Car".

An inspired drive saw Hamilton slowly work his way up the grid and finish the race behind eventual victor Vettel.

It was the second time in three races that a Ferrari driver had been at fault for colliding with a Mercedes vehicle on an opening lap.

The German defeated second-placed Hamilton on Sunday to win the British GP in front of a partisan crowd and extended his lead in the Formula One championship standings to eight points after 10 of 21 races.

He expanded further in the post race press conference, where race victor Sebastian Vettel sat between him and Raikkonen.

In the post-race press conference which followed, he elaborated further on how he made the move stick.

The race was neutralised again moments later for an accident at Copse between Carlos Sainz and Romain Grosjean, when Sainz attacked on the outside but Grosjean suffered a wobble at the apex. "So that's fine. I deserve it, I took the 10 seconds and kept fighting". Verstappen and Raikkonen were third and fourth with Ricciardo fifth. Frenchman Esteban Ocon finished seventh for Force India, who are now level on points with McLaren and ahead on podiums.

Any race where your team wins will be declared as a great race by a team boss but when the racing is brilliant throughout the field, the action is close, and your driver still reigns supreme, it's that little bit sweeter.

The nightmare continued for former champions Williams at their home race, with Lance Stroll bringing out red flags when he crashed at the start of the first phase of qualifying. "I will not give up".
