Trump's visit ruffles feathers, sets back UK-US special relationship — Interview

Facing worldwide pressure, Trump later walked back the comments, first calling them "fake news" and later saying that whatever May wanted to do with Brexit was fine with him.

But Trump tried to make it up to May on Friday, repeating over and over that she was a "tough negotiator", - a high form of praise from the author of "The Art of the Deal".

Trump said if May went ahead with the "soft Brexit" plan outlined last Friday - that led to the resignations of Johnson and Brexit secretary David Davis - it will "kill" any prospect of a US-UK trade deal.

The Financial Times also runs with Mr Trump "switching tack" as he aims to "mend bridges". "We wanted to embarrass him and I think we have done that today".

The Independent also carries a picture from the protest, while reporting on Mr Trump's "backtrack".

May's formal proposals were published on Thursday, but hours later the Sun published an interview with Trump where he appeared to side with the prime minister's critics. And he warned that Britain's trade relationship with the US could be in jeopardy if May follows through with her "soft" Brexit blueprint.

And the Daily Star reports on TV and radio host Richard Bacon, who is ill in hospital. And he marveled during the joint appearance at Chequers, the 16th century country residence used by British prime ministers since the 1920s.

"Unfortunately, there was a story that was done which was generally fine but it didn't put in what I said about the Prime Minister and I said a tremendous thing", he said. "I think he has done a bad job on crime, if you look, all of the terrible things going on there, with all of the crime that is being brought in", he said.

"So if they go in a slightly different route [on Brexit] - and I know they do want independence. if they are going to go in a certain route I just said that I hope you are going to be able to trade with the United States".

The President said: "This incredible woman right here is doing a fantastic job, a great job".

"If you reported them that's good", Mr Trump told the political correspondent. "I actually told Theresa May how to do it, but she didn't listen to me".

He said, "We've never developed a better relationship... it was really something". According to The Guardian, the white paper says the goal is to minimize "disruption to trade between the United Kingdom and the European Union, protecting jobs and livelihoods", as well as stipulating free trade areas for goods.

This is what White House spokespeople do when a statement they're tasked to deliver is ridiculous and they'd rather attribute it to Trump rather than sacrifice their own credibility.

Trump said that Khan was doing a "terrible job" in fighting crime and believed the mayor was responsible for the terror attacks that had taken place in London because he had "done a very bad job on terrorism" as well as a "bad job on crime".

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of protesters marched against the U.S. president through central London, bringing much of the capital to a standstill.
