But any Republican defections could be offset by centrist Democrats campaigning for re-election in conservative-leaning states Trump won handily in 2016.

Minutes after President Trump announced Brett Kavanaugh as his nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court, Alabama's Democratic senator took a wait-and-see approach.

"To be a good umpire and a good judge, don't be a jerk", Kavanaugh said in a speech three years ago. "He is a brilliant jurist with a clear and effective writing style, universally regarded as one of the finest and sharpest legal minds of our time".

NBC News reported that the Trump team was in talks with Kennedy about his replacement for months and he only felt comfortable retiring after he "received assurance that it would be Kavanaugh", per NBC reporter Geoff Bennett.

He is now a United States Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.

Some conservatives have expressed concerns about Kavanaugh, questioning his commitment to social issues like abortion and noting his time serving under President George W. Bush as evidence he is a more establishment choice.

In addition to working in the White House Counsel's office under Bush, Kavanaugh also worked for independent counsel Kenneth Starr's investigation into the death of Clinton aide Vince Foster and the Monica Lewinsky probe that led to President Bill Clinton's impeachment.

In a separate case relating to greenhouse gas emissions, for example, Kavanaugh warned that allowing the EPA to make broad regulations "could significantly enhance the Executive Branch's power at the expense of Congress's and thereby alter the relative balance of powers". It's unclear what evidence there is for that, other than Trump's promise to appoint anti-abortion judges. "The country wants the President to be "one of us" who bears the same responsibilities of citizenship that all share".

Manchin noted that he had "great concern" about what a conservative-majority court would mean for the Affordable Care Act's provisions benefiting those with pre-existing conditions.

Kavanaugh, in brief remarks at the White House, underscored his conservative credentials.

"My judicial philosophy is straightforward". "In your opinions, demonstrate civility - to show, to help display that you're trying to make the decision impartially, dispassionately, based on the law and not based on your emotions". "Judge Kavanaugh clearly understands the proper role of a judge is to interpret the law as it is written and apply the law impartially". Keep reading below to learn more about Trump's pick!

Trump published a similar list during the 2016 campaign, and it was widely credited with helping him win the votes of social conservatives who otherwise might have been skeptical of a thrice-married billionaire from NY.

"Not being a politician, I think people wanted to hear what some of my choices may be, and it was pretty effective", Trump said of the list, on the day Kennedy's retirement was announced. He urged Democrats to support Kavanaugh so that he "could be confirmed with the ninetysomething Senate votes he deserves, rather than the fiftysomething votes he is likely to get". Is it any wonder that President Trump chose Kavanaugh from the list of 25? Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., a longtime member of the Judiciary Committee. Thomas, at 70, is the oldest of the court's remaining Republican appointees.

Jones' position could be critical to Kavanaugh's confirmation as the Republicans hold only a 51-49 advantage in the Senate. It turns out, Kavanaugh has essentially nothing in his court opinion history addressing the issue.

If Republicans lose the Senate, they would still have control of the chamber until January. "The most important thing we can do".

The president has also been wooing red-state Democrats as a kind of insurance policy. But almost all Senate Democrats and many Democratic voters are expected to oppose Trump's nominee.

Republicans will target three Democrats facing re-election in conservative states where Trump won big majorities in the 2016 election - Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Joe Donnelly of in - to support Kavanaugh. Both Collins and Murkowski are facing pressure at home to reject Trump's Supreme Court nominee. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of ME, moderate Republicans both - were coy when asked on Tuesday for their thoughts on Kavanaugh. "And no one, no one, has been more dedicated to overturning Roe v. Wade than Leonard Leo", Schumer said. Although Trump said he would not ask judicial candidates about their views on Roe directly, advocates on both sides of the abortion debate believe that ruling could be vulnerable once Kennedy's successor is seated.

There are several cases on LGBT rights filtering through the lower courts that may end up before the Supreme Court, from issues relating to discrimination and "religious freedom" to battles over transgender school kids and military personnel.

Vice President Mike Pence told Fox News exclusively on Tuesday that he has been "very encouraged" by the initial reaction on Capitol Hill to Judge Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court. He served for two years as Senior Associate Counsel and Associate Counsel to the President. "I think it's a damn shame that people spend millions of dollars in political campaign for supreme court justice".

"Thrilled tonight with @realdonaldtrump's pick for the United States Supreme Court", Rogers posted on Twitter. And the president moved swiftly to fill those openings with young, conservative judges. He has been a judge on the federal appeals court in Washington since 2006.
