Referring to the 97-2 vote Tuesday in the U.S. Senate affirming its support for NATO, Kerry called on Republican lawmakers to call Trump on his actions.

He has taken issue with how only five other nations make the current contribution of two per cent of their GDP.

In 2017, the United States spent 3.1 percent of its GDP on defense, while Estonia, Greece, Poland and the United Kingdom stand as the only countries which have crossed the two percent threshold.

Baltic leaders fearful of any repeat of Russia's annexation of Crimea called for unity as they arrived at the summit, while Slovakia's President Andrej Kiska said his country was "one of the good guys" because he was increasing defense spending.

Trump and German Chancellor Angela Merkel earlier today.

He continued the attack Thursday, complaining that, "Germany just started paying Russian Federation, the country they want protection from, Billions of Dollars for their Energy needs coming out of a new pipeline from Russian Federation".

Her endorsement of the Trump-Putin meeting attempts to cut off awkward questions about Trump's commitment to Nato, an organisation he has openly and repeatedly criticised, which has dogged the ongoing Nato summit and threatened to undermine Trump's visit to London later this week. The US is paying for Europe's protection, then loses billions on Trade.

"Trump has done more damage to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation in 18 months than Soviet & Russian leaders achieved in 7 decades", McFaul said on Twitter.

"Germany is totally controlled by Russia", Trump said in a searing critique over breakfast with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

Stoltenberg acknowledged that Trump had expressed himself in "very direct language" but insisted that away from the fiery rhetoric the allies all agree on fundamental issues: the need to boost NATO's resilience, fight terror and share the cost of defence more equally. "We have a tremendous relationship with Germany", he said.

"I don't understand why Germany would be so in favor of supporting that particular supply source instead of diversifying", said Corker, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

NATO's chief Jens Stoltenberg wants leaders to agree to fund Afghan security forces until 2024, despite public fatigue in Western countries about their involvement in the conflict.

Germany presently spends about 1.2 percent on defense.

"If you look at it, Germany is a captive of Russian Federation because they supply", he continued.

"I welcome President Trump's forthcoming meeting with President Putin: open channels of communication between the U.S. and Russian Federation are key to managing the risks of confrontation", she planned to say, according to the spokesman.

"We call upon [North Korea] to fully implement its global obligations; to eliminate its nuclear, chemical, and biological warfare capabilities and ballistic missiles, and abandon all related programmes", the statement said.
