Tiger Woods at Quicken Loans National: Tiger shoots 68

Francesco Molinari cruised to an eight-shot win at the Quicken Loans National after firing an impressive 62 on Sunday. In fact, playing for Europe later this year in France nearly prompted Molinari to change his plans for this week and play the French Open.

Molinari's decision to stay in America paid off in a big way.

"It's where I want to be", he said, referring more to his position on the leaderboard. "So I guess job done".

Tiger Woods made a handful of birdies and a couple of messy bogeys in his final start before the third major of the season.

A familiar right fist pump followed a 26-footer for birdie at the par-3 ninth, offsetting a bogey-5 on the previous hole and producing a seventh consecutive one-putt that had Woods within two shots of the lead at the turn. "I figured I had to get to at least 10 and making four bogeys definitely hurts that". His tee shot at the par-4 first sailed right and landed in the primary rough 180 yards from the flag, and his approach settled in the first cut behind the green.

For the week, he played those two ripe-for-scoring holes 1 over, making only one birdie on the drive-able par-4 14th.

Woods will need to change this current harmful habit or he won't capture his 80th PGA Tour title and first victory in five years.

Toney Penna was the last Italian to win on the PGA Tour in 1947.

He has never come from more than five shots behind in the final round in any of his 79 PGA Tour victories.

He admitted it had been a gamble to then decide to miss the French Open at Le Golf National, venue for September's clash with the USA, to play in a PGA Tour event instead.

As for why he hasn't been able to match his European achievements, Molinari believes it comes down to just playing well and familiarity.

"I grew up in Mexico, in the north part of Mexico where it's very hot", he said. Surprisingly he called winning, "a lot easier than I thought". It's not your own country. This time, he had the course to himself with a back nine that was close to perfection, much like his week.

On the up: Tiger Woods finished tied for fourth in the Quicken Loans National.

He sank an eight-foot birdie at 15 and a 14-footer at the 16th, but it was too little too late. He finished 10 shots behind Molinari, but still feels like he accomplished something this week.

There's more to that, and through 11 tournaments this year, Woods hasn't quite figured it out. I'm seeing the lines again, I'm rolling the ball on my line, I've got the speed and I really like the swing of this putter.

"I know it's boring and everyone says the same but it's the way golf works". "Finally, I'm starting to hit some putts".

"It was frustrating because I played better than my score indicates", he said.

"The putts I missed, I hit a lot of good ones, which I don't mind because I hadn't been doing that for a while, so this was nice".
