Author Michael Ondaatje's The English Patient was voted as the best-ever victor of the Man Booker Prize at an event Sunday celebrating 50 years of the prestigious literary award.

The Canadian writer's tale of love and conflict during World War II was awarded the Golden Man Booker Prize for fiction after winning a public vote.

The novel won the 1992 Booker Prize and the 1992 Governor General's Award.

The other finalists were In A Free State by V S Naipaul for the 70s, Moon Tiger by Penelope Lively for the 80s, Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel for the 2000s and Lincoln In The Bardo by George Saunders for the 2010s.

"The English Patient is a compelling work of fiction - both poetic and philosophical", Booker Prize Foundation chair Baroness Helena Kennedy said in a statement.

At the end of may, the jury selected five best books of the 51 who received the Pulitzer prize.

The English Patient was adapted into a film in 1996.

Judge Kamila Shamsie said the story was truly "transformative" as she explained why she had selected it as the victor of the 90s. It is reported by The New York Times. "The English Patient", which follows the lives of four characters brought together during World War II, told through the morphine-affected memories of a severely burned patient, was a Booker Prize victor in 1992.

The victor of the special one-off competition held to mark the Man Booker Prize's 50th anniversary celebrations was chosen by the public. "It's intricately (and rewardingly) structured, beautifully written, with great humanity written into every page..."

The English Patient, the 1992 Booker Prize victor, was declared the overall victor of the Golden Man Booker Prize in the 50 year history of the award at the Man Booker 50 Festival in London's Royal Festival Hall on Sunday. He is one of only two authors whose work has won the Booker Prize and an Oscar, and his latest novel, Warlight, has just been published by Jonathan Cape.
