Only about a quarter of USA adults meet guidelines for both aerobic and muscle-strengthening exercise in their spare time, according to new data from the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics.

HHS guidelines advise adults aged 18 to 64 should participate in some type of muscle strengthening activity at least twice a week, paired with moderate aerobic exercise for 150 minutes per week or 75 minutes per week if vigorously working out. Nationally, between 2010 and 2015, 22.9 percent of adults met that goal. More men (roughly 27%) than women (almost 19%) met both guidelines, and both genders saw slightly higher percentages among working adults (almost 29% and 21%, respectively).

The fact that the overall nationwide rate surpassed the government's Healthy People 2020 goal-to have 20.1 percent of adults meeting exercise guidelines by 2020-is great news. Thirteen states, most notably MS at just 13.5%, were significantly lower than the national average. Likewise, in MS, 9.7 percent of women federal guidelines compared with 18.7 percent of the nation.

On average, women are less physically active than men, at 18.7 percent across the nation compared to 27.2 percent of men. States like Kentucky and NY get significantly less exercise than the national average, while states like Arizona and Minnesota report significantly higher numbers.

Geographic location proved to be the biggest determinant of whether residents meet physical activity guidelines. "There are differences at the state level, and there are differences by some sociodemographic factors". There were 13 more states that also surpassed the goal, as well as the District of Columbia, whereas 13 other states, and MS in particular, had a much lower score than the average percentage, with only 13.5% of people meeting the guidelines.

There were also significant differences between men and women, according to the CDC's data.

When was the last time you went to the gym?

"You can have a physically active job, but certainly, if one is out as a contractor, aspects of being a fireman or firewoman, such jobs have physical aspects to them in a way that sitting in a job do not", professor of physical therapy and human movement sciences at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago, Daniel Corcos, stated. However, the report looked only at leisure-time physical activity, so adults who log exercise through active jobs or commutes were not included in the findings. In general, working men and women were more likely to get adequate exercise than non-working men and women.

Many New Yorkers rely on walking to work to get their physical activity.
