"They strayed into a pride of lions - it's a big pride so they didn't have too much time", Mr Fox told AFP news agency.

Lions have mauled to death suspected poachers who entered a South African wildlife reserve to kill rhinos.

"We are not sure how many - there is not much left of them."There are clothes for three people".

According to its website, Sibuya Game Reserve is located on the Sunshine Coast of the Eastern Cape, approximately 130 kms from Port Elizabeth or East London.

"Judging from the shoes and items found on the scene‚ I suspect it is about two or maybe three".

"At the moment we can't tell you how many of them [the poachers]".

And in perhaps the most heartbreaking act of conservation, park rangers in some parts of Africa are preemptively removing rhinos' horns so that poachers won't be tempted to kill the animals for them.

Fox says the handler of an anti-poaching dog heard a "loud commotion" coming from the lions early on Monday.

A May 2018 "60 Minutes" report revealed that they are being slaughtered at the shocking rate of three a day at the hands of poachers like the group killed in Sibuya.

Previous reports suggested that a lone poacher had been attacked, but further investigation of the bad scene suggested at least two people were devoured by the lions.

After alerting authorities, the reserve's vet tranquilised the lions so that police and anti-poaching units could retrieve the human remains and search for further clues.

Captain Govender said: "We do not know identities but firearms have been taken by the police and will be sent to the ballistics laboratory to see if they have been used in poaching before".

"Although we will continue to be extremely vigilant we remain positive that this incident will not necessitate any changes to the status quo", he said.

Poaching is a major issue on the Eastern Cape with nine rhinos killed by illegal hunters on reserves this year.
