Certain mosquito species carry the West Nile virus, which can cause humans to contract West Nile encephalitis, an infection that can result in an inflammation of the brain.

Apply Insect Repellent when you go outdoors.

Use insect repellants with DEET according to the manufacturer's directions.

Repellents containing permethrin are meant for clothing and gear and should not be applied directly to the skin.

Limit outdoor activities between dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.

Consider wearing long-sleeved shirts, long trousers and socks when outdoors, particularly when mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk, or in areas known for having large numbers of mosquitoes.

"The best thing for people to do is really to eliminate any places around their home where mosquitoes could be breeding", he said.

IDPH is partnering with Iowa State University to provide all supplies needed to trap the mosquitos throughout the county.


Olivares said an aggressive policy of preventing and correcting standing water is necessary, along with keeping lawns and pastures well maintained and mowed regularly and free of debris, especially of items that could collect water. Verify the left tires, flower pots, buckets etc.

- Drill holes in the bottoms of recycling containers that are kept outdoors.

- Clear roof gutters and be sure they drain properly.

Clean out birdbaths, wading pools and swimming pools.

- Remove leaf debris from yards and gardens, and remove vegetation and debris from the edge of ponds.

The commission also advises residents to fix window and door screens, empty standing water from gutters, buckets, pool covers and other places regularly.

State health officials, a part of the Bristol County Mosquito Control Project, sprayed pesticides in parks, including Buttonwood Park, Brooklawn Park and Fort Taber, and throughout downtown early this morning.
