Chiang Rai acting Gov. Narongsak Osatanakorn said the second phase began at 11 a.m. and authorities "hope to hear good news in the next few hours".

A tiny submarine is on its way to Thailand, sent by Tesla CEO Elon Musk to help rescue the remaining members of a youth soccer team who are trapped in a cave.

"All conditions are still as good as they were yesterday", he told a news conference.

The families of Thai boys rescued after a harrowing two weeks trapped in a cave deep underground will be allowed to see them today, but will be told not to hug or kiss them until health checks are complete.

Officials have said storms forecast for Chiang Rai province in Thailand's far north had factored into their decision to go ahead with a complicated and risky plan for the boys aged between 11 and 16 and their coach to dive out of the cave.

A fifth boy was brought out earlier on Monday, a navy official said. Heavy rain flooded the cave entrance after they entered it, trapping them inside. A massive global search operation was launched and it took 10 days to locate the boys, who had taken shelter on a dry slope deep in the complex.

Interior Minister Anupong Paojinda said the same divers who took part in Sunday's rescue will return to extricate the others as they know the cave conditions and what to do.

Thai officials have confirmed that they are prioritising the weaker boys first, in order to ensure they get quick treatment.

Rescue workers prepare to transport boys rescued from that Luang cave complex Sunday in Chiang Rai province in an image provided by the authorities.

Thirteen foreign divers and five members of Thailand's elite navy SEAL unit make up the main team guiding the boys to safety through narrow, submerged passageways that claimed the life of a former Thai navy diver on Friday.

Video provided by rescuers shows the first four boys being stretchered out of Tham Luang cave complex, where they had been trapped since Jun 23.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha plans to host a thank-you party for all the rescue teams, Mr Narongsak said.

Rescuers had planned to take a 10- to 20-hour pause in the rescue efforts to replenish the cave with oxygen and give the team of 18 divers leading the boys on the hard journey a chance to rest. Weather forecasters said heavy rain could hit the area on Monday afternoon and continue through the week.

Five boys have been rescued till now, and divers are continuing with the rescue operations.

"The water level is not worrisome", he said, the paper reported.

Authorities said the next phase could begin any time within a 10-hour window that began about 0000 GMT (7am local time) on Monday.

On Sunday night, Thai navy SEALs posted a celebratory note on their Facebook page, saying: "Have sweet dreams everyone".

Among the ideas were drilling an escape route through the mountain, or leaving them for months until the monsoon season ended and the flooding subsided.

TRT World's John Joe Regan has the latest from Thailand. The search and rescue operation has involved dozens of global experts and rescuers, including a US military team.

He tweeted Sunday evening the group was en route to Thailand with the device and would reach the destination in about 17 hours.

Each child - wearing diving equipment - is taken by two divers, one in front and one behind, and guided via a set of pulleys.
