Scott Pruitt resigned. Twitter was ready

One scandal too many

It's this notoriety and insider savvy that could make Wheeler unsafe; unlike Pruitt, who was relatively new to Washington when he took the job leading the EPA, Wheeler could continue to work closely with old friends.

Priutt's deputy, Andrew Wheeler, will take over in the interim.

Meanwhile, activists argued Mr Pruitt's policies of moving to boost fossil fuel production and rollback regulations opposed by corporate interests had endangered the environment.

Speaking to Jim Sciutto on "The Lead with Jake Tapper", the independent Vermont senator said he is "vigorously opposed" to Wheeler as Pruitt's replacement.

"I have accepted the resignation of Scott Pruitt as the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency", tweeted the president, ending months of speculation about the future of the man he had tasked with dismantling former president Barack Obama's green legacy.

An Ohio native, Wheeler served as a special assistant in the EPA's Pollution Prevention and Toxics office in the early 1990s before moving over to the Senate environment panel, where he eventually became GOP staff director under Sen. The idea was ultimately rejected by the White House.

"We have a bigger uphill battle because it wasn't the policies that drove Pruitt out; it was the other craziness". There are more than 500 abandoned mines, some of which are already part of the EPA's Superfund program.

Senator Inhofe, who dismisses global warming as a hoax and famously tossed a snowball on the Senate floor to prove his point, hailed Wheeler's ascension to EPA chief.

"Wheeler is much smarter and will try to keep his efforts under the radar in implementing Trump's destructive agenda", Jeremy Symons, vice president for political affairs at the Environmental Defense Fund told Politico in May of this year.

Wheeler is originally from Hamilton, Ohio, his biography on the EPA website said.

Wheeler's and others' lobbying efforts worked: Late past year, President Donald Trump traveled to Utah to officially announce the reduction of Bears Ears.

After Pruitt's resignation, all eyes are on Wheeler. That included the roughly 20 members of a security detail Pruitt's EPA had created to guard him around the clock. "So far, Wheeler hasn't signaled any willingness to shift EPA away from the assaults on climate regulations waged by Pruitt and Trump".

EFI's activities - and Wheeler's connections to the company - worry environmentalists, who aren't thrilled to see a former energy lobbyist take over as the nation's new top environmental cop.

On Tuesday, White House spokesman Hogan Gidley called the mounting ethical questions facing Pruitt "troublesome" and said "these things matter to the president as well, and he's looking into those".

Murray Energy's CEO, Robert Murray, has been a loyal supporter of Trump. "We must have someone running the EPA that will protect clean air and clean water".

Prior to joining the EPA, Wheeler also lobbied for the bailout of the coal industry on behalf of Murray Energy.

Wheeler was only marginally approved as EPA deputy in April.

Pruitt's resignation was announced by President Donald Trump over Twitter.
