Samsung is widely rumoured to unveil a foldable smartphone called Galaxy X next year, which is supposed to be the company first foldable phone. The forecast is slightly below the 14.9 trillion won analyst average estimate in a Thomson Reuters poll.

Operating profit is expected to come to 14.8 trillion won ($13.2 billion) for the April-June period, higher than the 14.07 trillion won in the same period in 2017, but down from the record 15.64 trillion won of the previous quarter.

"It is going to be tough".

"The won depreciation is working in Samsung's favor", said Claire Kim, an analyst at Daishin Securities Co.

Just when it appears that we've seen everything there is to see regarding the as-yet-unannounced Samsung Galaxy Note 9, another set of images surfaces that (allegedly) shows us more of the upcoming device.

Samsung remains the world's No. 1 smartphone maker with more than a fifth of the global market, but it's facing increasing pressure from Chinese rivals such as Xiaomi Inc. and Oppo Electronics Corp., which sell similar devices at a cheaper price point.

The company also said sales fell by 5 percent from a year ago, to 58 trillion won. The firm did not elaborate and will release detailed earnings in late July. That streak was primarily fueled by its lucrative memory chip business, which profited from increased demand from device manufacturers thanks to a reduced supply in the industry.

"While chip sales keep rising, smartphones aren't looking good", said Jung Sang-jin, a fund manager at Korea Investment Management.

There are also fears that a Chinese price-fixing probe into chipmakers including Samsung could limit the upside for DRAM prices, as China is the largest importer of memory products.
