Samsung Responds on Messages App Bug That Shared Photos Without Permission

The poster says that even though there was no evidence of the mass photo sharing in Samsung Messages, it showed up on his T-Mobile logs.

"Last night around 2:30am, my phone sent [my girlfriend] my entire photo gallery over text but there was no record of it on my messages app", complained one confused Galaxy S9+ owner. The seemingly misbehaving app is the default messaging tool on Samsung's Android devices.

The issue also appears to be affecting some text messages. Make that doubly so if you have a Samsung phone with nudes in it. Errors included scheduled text messages ending up in the wrong threads.

Some believe the problem stems from the conversion from the SMS messaging protocol to the new RCS (Rich Communication Services) on the native Samsung texting app. Samsung has acknowledged the problem and is working on it, but has not pointed to a cause. This is exactly what some Samsung devices are doing as reported by a number of different users online. However, T-Mobile told Gizmodo that the whole thing is "not a T-Mobile issue".

Speaking to Gizmodo, Samsung said it was aware of the issue and its technical teams were looking into it. "Concerned customers are encouraged to contact us directly at 1-800-SAMSUNG".

Samsung and T-Mobile didn't immediately reply to CNET's requests for comment. El Reg asked the chaebol for any explanation, and will let you know if we hear more.

For those of you looking for a workaround while the company tries to fix the problem, your options appear to be going into your device's app settings and revoking "Samsung Messages' ability to access storage". This may be a pain, however, because it means if you do want to send photos or files through the app, you need to restore permission in settings again.
