More than two hours after that match point, Federer and Anderson battled and battled.

The three-time Wimbledon champion was broken in the opening game of the fourth set, but won the next four games and broke again to clinch victory.

No one saw that coming. Every set won by Anderson required an extra game to determine the victor. But there was more. Anderson upset top seed Roger Federer of Switzerland on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic shrugged off a second-set slump to reach a Grand Slam semifinal for the first time since 2016 by beating Kei Nishikori 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Kevin Anderson is moving on at Wimbledon. I don't know if it had something to do with the breeze, just a bad day from my side, except the first set.

It marks the best women's doubles showing at a Grand Slam for the 26-year-old Dabrowski, who advanced to the quarter-finals with Xu at the 2017 U.S. Open and 2018 Australian Open.

Anderson never had made it beyond the fourth round at Wimbledon until this week, carried by his booming serve.

Federer couldn't convert a break point at 3-4 and as the final set headed into extra time a lone voice in the crowd, mindful of England's imminent World Cup semi-final against Croatia, shouted out "Hurry up I need to watch the football".

"It's like that with the big servers", Federer said.

Gaining in confidence, Anderson took care of Federer 6-4 in the fourth, setting up a do-or-die fifth set.

Anderson, the first South African to reach the last eight since Wayne Ferreira in 1994, was steadfast though and did what no man had done at Wimbledon since last year's semi-final when he broke Federer's serve early in the second set.

Anderson then served it out, ending things with a 128 miles per hour service victor, and raised both arms overhead.

Anderson will take on the victor of Milos Raonic and American John Isner.

Interviewed by Sky Sport, the eight-time champion Andre Agassi himself admitted that he would like to see the epic clash: 'This would be for the history books, for everybody. His loss to Anderson was the first match he'd played at No. 1 since 2015.

Federer dispatched Anderson, who was playing in his first Wimbledon quarterfinal, in the first easily, taking the set 6-2 in just 26 minutes. That earned a code violation from chair umpire Carlos Ramos.

Djokovic, seeded 12th, incurred a warning for throwing his racket and was clearly frustrated, complaining of "double standards" when Nishikori was not punished for a racket throw. "By the end I thought I did a great job".

Rafael Nadal and Juan Martin del Potro meet later on Wednesday to decide whom Djokovic will face in the next phase of the London tournament.

"I am peaking at the right moment". I think his learning curves could be quicker but they have to be his. "I don't want to stop here".
