Liverpool began monitoring Shaqiri earlier in the summer and they are now holding discussions with Stoke about a move for the 26-year-old.

The Switzerland global, now on holiday after appearing at the World Cup, has a release clause in the region of £13.5million and the Potters are resigned to losing one of their prized assets after relegation from the Premier League.

Liverpool are confident that they will sign Swiss global Xherdan Shaqiri this summer, according to a report in The Guardian.

The exact nature of the release clause in Shaqiri's contract is unknown, though it is believed to be in excess of £13m.

The Swiss winger once again impressed for Switzerland at this summer's World Cup, but could ultimately do little to stop his country sliding out of the tournament at the hands of a plucky Sweden side in the round of 16.

Shaqiri has indicated that he wants the move which should be sealed before the Reds head off to the United States as part of their pre-season plans.

Former Stoke boss Mark Hughes signed Shaqiri from Inter Milan in August 2015 for £12million. He admitted that he would like to leave following last season's relegation. Liverpool have been trying to reignite a deal despite a hands-off warning issued before the World Cup.

Shaqiri would link up with lethal attacking trio Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah as well as new signings Fabinho and Naby Keita at Liverpool.
