'Reckless': Trump escalates trade war with another $US200b in Chinese tariffs

The Latest: China raises tariffs on optical fiber materials

The US has ramped up its trade war with China, outlining a list of $200bn (£150bn) worth of additional products it plans to place tariffs on.

The list of goods affected by the new tariffs includes seafood, fruits and vegetables, grains and tobacco. High-level talks between the two countries starting in May failed to deliver a breakthrough to head off a trade war.

The United States and China launched what Beijing called the "biggest trade war in economic history" Friday, July 6, imposing tariffs on billions of dollars of each other's goods amid a spiraling dispute over technology.

President Donald Trump is preparing to release a list of an additional $200 billion in Chinese products to be hit with tariffs, according to two people familiar with the matter.

Some countries have already announced retaliatory tariffs and other moves that US industries have said forced them to curb plans for expansion and investments overseas.

China will reimburse the buyer for the cost of the 25 percent tariff on soybean imports from the USA if the cargoes are for state reserves, Bloomberg reported earlier citing people familiar with the matter.

All told, Trump has threatened eventually to slap tariffs on up to $550 billion in Chinese imports - more than China actually exported to the United States past year - if Beijing won't relent to US pressure and continues to retaliate. China quickly responded by imposing tariffs on $34 billion in USA products. But Trump hasn't backed down, arguing that China's unfair trading practices are hurting American workers.
